Legalism and Giving
Tithing is a principle that we fi nd most often in the Old Testament. Like many other things in the Old Testament, God had a desire to teach his people deeper truths about life; a truth within a law. And, like any law, it is easy to do just enough to slide by and feel good about what we have done. Jesus was good at helping folks no longer feel good about doing just enough. When a young ruler came to him and asked "What more must I do to inherit the kingdom of heaven?" Jesus said, "Give it all (that’s from the J.V.- Jim Version)." The deeper truth God desires for us is that we would be people of generosity and trust, give richly to others as God has given to us, and turn to the Father, Son and Holy Spirit as our greatest provision in life. So if you do give 10% (or tithe) of your income to the church, let me congratulate you because in today’s culture this is a rare accomplishment. But please by no means feel like you have arrived in a place of spiritual perfection because the voice of Jesus should always be found in your ear and in mine whispering these difficult words "Give it all." --Jim Voigt
