Disaster Relief

Schweitzer's Disaster Relief Ministry

Schweitzer's disaster relief ministry is recognized throughout the community.  We sent disaster response teams, food, and supplies to disaster victims of Katrina, Rita, Caruthersville, Christian County, and Fredericktown.  We have served as a Red Cross shelter three times, once for Katrina victims and then for the displaced people from the Columns Four fire.  We also housed 158 people and fed 200 for 7 days during the recent January ice storm.  Schweitzer is  now recognized as "a church that serves."

In the event of a declared disaster in the Springfield Metro area, the Office of Emergency Management has designated Schweitzer as The Volunteer Coordination Center for all relief agencies.  The Schweitzer disaster units will respond as before; however, we will now have teams organizing other volunteers from many other churches and agencies into coordinated disaster response units.
